It's been an active offseason for the Indianapolis Colts. That started with hiring Shane Steichen from the Philadelphia Eagles as head coach. Then, the team traded away Pro Bowl corner Stephon Gilmore, among other moves.
The Colts then identified Anthony Richardson as its franchise quarterback. There has been no shortage of movement up and down the roster during the first offseason of the Steichen era.
But there could still be more moves to come ahead of the season. ESPN is suggesting that general manager Chris Ballard dips back into the free agent market and adds a player that could give the roster a much-needed boost.
Which would be signing former Denver Broncos offensive lineman Dalton Risner. Risner, a former first-round NFL Draft selection, would have the ability to bolster a need up front for the Colts.
It wasn't long ago that the Colts' offensive line was not just the best unit on the roster but also one of the best in the NFL. The collective play in 2022 was mediocre, and the depth has thinned out in a hurry. Will Fries projects as the top right guard, with 2020 draft pick Danny Pinter behind him. Risner is the best available guard at the moment and would likely slot into a starting gig after serving as a starter for all 62 games he played with the Broncos over the past four seasons. Whenever you draft a young quarterback, having as many capable players around him is simply good business. Risner would help Anthony Richardson immediately.
Indianapolis was hit by the injury bug in 2022. As a result, the Colts struggled to run the football or protect the quarterback. That obviously cannot repeat itself in 2023 if the Colts have any hopes of competing. Adding Risner to the roster seems like a smart idea to look into.
Experts think Colts HC will immediately one up Jalen Hurts
Betting odds reveal high expectations for Indianapolis Colts head coach Shane Steichen and rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson.
