The trajectory of the Indianapolis Colts 2024 season and beyond is directly tied to the success of QB Anthony Richardson.
The same might be said about your fantasy football team if you have the second-year QB on your roster.
And ESPN fantasy football expert Field Yates is "All in" on the Colts QB ahead of the 2024 season.
Yates ranked Richardson as his QB three in fantasy football ahead of the 2024 season. Ahead of multiple top-tier QBs such as Lamar Jackson, Patrick Mahomes, and Joe Burrow. This ranking has gotten quite the response from NFL fans who seem to think Yates is too high on the Colts QB, who only appeared in four games during his rookie season. But the numbers back up Yates' rankings.
Per Scott Barrett of Fantasy Points, Anthony Richardson had the most fantasy points per four full quarters in 2023 with 29.2, with Josh Allen being the closest QB behind him at 24.2. He also shared that Richardson averaged the most fantasy points per dropback in 2023 with 0.76, with Allen again the closest QB behind him at 0.64.
Now, Richardson's numbers are hardly a one-for-one comparison to other QBs because he played so few games last season. But it's an example of why it shouldn't shock anyone that Yates views Richardson so highly in terms of fantasy football this season. It's been known for quite some time that QBs who excel as runners are like cheat codes in fantasy due to their rushing numbers. And in the short time we saw Richardson last season, he already looked like one of the best-rushing QBs in the NFL.
He totaled 136 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 25 rushing attempts last season in just four games, two of which he was forced to leave the game early due to injury. So, if Richardson is able to stay healthy, I think he will prove Yates correct and will be in contention for the QB 1 spot in fantasy football rankings by the end of the season. But while his numbers are dynamic, you must decide if you think they are worth the risk. If he can't play nearly the entire season, it's not going to matter if he scores a lot of points in just four games again.
