Colts' former kicker Rodrigo Blankenship's football career is experiencing a revival in the UFL
The Colts signed Blankenship as an undrafted free agent in 2020. He appeared in 22 games over three seasons with the team. He attempted 54 field goals in that span and connected on 45, for an 83.9 field goal percentage. He had a pretty strong first year with the team, appearing in 16 games after winning the starting kicker job in training camp. He made 32 of his 37 field goals, with a season-long of 53, which would go on to be his career long.
The main issue with Blankenship is that the Colts quickly discovered that he didn't have a strong enough leg to trust often beyond 50. After only attempting three in his first year, the team asked him to attempt only two more in the eight games he played between 2021 and 2022.
To start the 2025 UFL season, he is 16/16 and has already connected on more than 50+ yard field goals this season than he did in his entire tenure with the Colts. He has also surpassed his career high in distance with field goals from 55 and 56 this year. We saw Jake Bates turn a strong kicking season in the UFL into an NFL opportunity by signing with the Detroit Lions last year. If Blankenship can keep this up, you would have to assume he gets an invite to training camp with someone to compete for a starting NFL kicking job yet again. Things might not have worked. out in Indianapolis, but I for one am rooting for "Specs".
