Colts: The ideal draft strategy isn't the one you think it is
The smart move may not be the popular move for the Indianapolis Colts.
There has been no shortage of speculation regarding the Indianapolis Colts trading up in the 2023 NFL Draft. The Colts currently sit with the No. 4 overall selection. However, there is thinking that Indianapolis make a move to get the first overall pick.
And that wouldn't be a bad move. Especially with the glaring need at quarterback. Securing the best overall signal caller and worrying about everything else later makes sense for the Colts.
On the other hand, staying put and letting the draft fall how it does could be the even better strategy. That is because there are a handful of quarterback in this draft class with franchise-changing potential.
Bryce Young is the undersized Heisman winner from Alabama. CJ Stroud is the accomplished passer out of Ohio State. Will Levis and Anthony Richardson are high-ceiling prospects from the SEC.

There are pros and cons with each. The NFL Scouting Combine and pro days will go a long way in separating the four from each other. In the meantime, the Colts should be in no rush to trade valuable capital to move up three selections.
Furthermore, it is well-known that the Chicago Bears and Arizona Cardinals are not looking to take quarterbacks. Sure, that leaves the door open for other teams to trade up. But if the Colts sit at 4, they will surely have their pick of at least two of the other passers on the board.
Making a move up to No. 1 and getting in front of the Texans is tempting. However, that would cost parting ways with their second-round selection and much more. Those selections, along with the pick at No. 4, could fill needs all over the roster.
Staying put and letting everything fall to them might very well be the route to take for the Indianapolis Colts in April. At the very least, it is a strategy heavily worth considering over the next month.
