Injury news just went from bad to worse for the Colts, with multiple key players dealing with issues ahead of Week 15
The Colts’ current injury issues don’t end with Daniel Jones’ season ending injury, with the news of Charvarius Ward, Braden Smith and Riley Leonard also dealing with issues of their own.
The Indianapolis Colts are already reeling after the news that starting QB Daniel Jones tore his right Achilles tendon. It doesn’t look like the team is getting any other injury, relief; in fact, its injury situation seems to be getting worse.
Head coach Shane Steichen spoke with the media on Monday and, in addition to confirming Jones’ injury, had others to share. This includes two key starters being added to the concussion protocol, and the team’s last hope at QB isn’t fully healthy.
Charvarius Ward and Braden Smith enter concussion protocol
The Colts are likely to be without their starting CB Charvarius Ward and their starting right tackle, Braden Smith, as both enter the concussion protocol. Losing Smith is a big deal because the Colts’ offensive line has already struggled in recent weeks and will now have to rely on rookie Jalen Travis to step in and protect a new quarterback under center in Riley Leonard.
This is Ward’s third time entering the league’s concussion protocol this season. The last time, he was pretty candid with the media and admitted that his mind went to a dark place while trying to recover. He landed on the IR and admitted he began to think about whether his football days were over. He returned to the field, but now he suffers a third concussion, and it seems fair to wonder if he’s played his final snaps this season, and maybe even in the NFL.
Riley Leonard is dealing with a knee injury
The Colts are already down to their third-string QB with Jones suffering a season-ending injury, and Anthony Richardson is still on the IR with an eye injury. Even their third-string, Leonard, isn’t at 100% as Steichen confirmed he is dealing with a knee issue. The hope is that he can play on Sunday, but if he doesn’t, the team will then turn to the current practice squad QB, Brett Rypien.
What a wild ride the Colts are now on at QB.
