Quarterback is the position of need that is generating the most attention for the Indianapolis Colts. And rightfully so. Landing that franchise signal caller is paramount.
However, the Colts have also used the offseason to fill holes at other positions and roles. That includes signing Samson Ebuka to bolster the trenches and Gardner Minshew to serve as a bridge to the (likely) incoming rookie.
Now, the Colts have addressed another need on the roster: wide receiver. Indianapolis has inked playmaking wideout Isaiah McKenzie in free agency. The former Buffalo Bills pass catcher is staying in the AFC.
McKenzie emerged as an electric weapon and big-play threat while with the Bills. He averaged nearly a first down per reception during his five seasons in Buffalo. Additionally, he turned 42 receptions into 423 yards and four touchdowns this past season.
For the Colts, adding a wide receiver had to be a priority. Especially with Parris Campbell leaving the roster in favor of a contract with the New York Giants. Indianapolis had to add another weapon to the team.
McKenzie won't solve everything out wide for the Colts. However, he does provide Indianapolis with a wideout that can product out of the slot while adding a nice complement to Michael Pittman and Alec Pierce.
Furthermore, the newest signing also has lots of experience on special teams, returning punts and kickoffs. That is another aspect where he should be able to help the team.
Drafting a wide receiver early should still be in serious consideration. With that said, this was a needed signing that has little downside as head coach Shane Steichen builds his roster.
At the very least, Isaiah McKenzie gives whoever is playing quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts next season another weapon to go to through the air.
