The Indianapolis Colts have used the free agent market to address different positions of need. Wide receiver is among those that Indianapolis has added to this offseason in the weeks leading up to the 2023 NFL Draft.
Indianapolis signed former Buffalo Bills wide receiver Isaiah McKenzie to bolster the pass catchers and explosive playmakers on the roster. McKenzie emerged as a weapon while catching with Josh Allen. He also provides a spark in the return game.
Interestingly, McKenzie actually talked with a few players already in the Colts' building before making his decision. That group included running back Zack Moss and defensive backs Kenny Moore and Tony Brown.
McKenzie and Moss were teammates with the Bills. Moss was involved in last season's trade that swapped Nyheim Hines to Buffalo and Moss to Indianapolis. That level of familiarity certainly helped McKenzie in his decision process.
The opportunity to carve out a role and make an impact in the wide receivers room is another aspect that McKenzie considered. He believes that he can help out the young wideouts in the room.
Additionally, it's interesting that Moore and Brown recruited McKenzie to Indianapolis. Playing in the defensive backfield, those two know what can help the team in the passing game. They obviously feel that the speedy McKenzie will provide a dynamic element that they won't have to deal with outside of practice.
McKenzie brings 11 receiving touchdowns and another punt return score to the Colts. He averaged 10.1 yards per reception last season and shown to be an electric player with the ball in his hands.
The Indianapolis Colts still have work to do at pass catcher. But it's noteworthy that multiple players on the roster recruited Isaiah McKenzie to the team in free agency. Perhaps that pays off on the field.
