The latest bit of NFL news does no favors for the Indianapolis Colts. Reports surfaced at the end of the week that the Tennessee Titans have agreed to a contract extension with star defensive lineman Jeffery Simmons.
Meaning that the Colts will see more of Simmons for the foreseeable future. Twice a season for the next four years to be exact. Which makes things even more difficult for whoever Indianapolis selects at quarterback in the upcoming 2023 NFL Draft.
Simmons is a terror for offensive lines to deal with. He has proven to be effective rushing the passer and stopping the run. The battles between he and Colts lineman Quenton Nelson have been appointment television over recent years.
Nelson is one of the premier interior linemen in the NFL, and Simmons has established himself in that tier at his respective position. While those matchups have gotten chippy on the field, there is a level of respect for each other's game.
"It’s his power and then the way he plays the game," Nelson said about Simmons during the season. "He plays hard. He’s got a motor. He’s one of the strongest if not the strongest D tackles I’ve gone against. And he’s not one dimensional. He can hit you with the pass rush or in the run game. He’s definitely the heart of that defense."
The Colts will certainly need Quenton Nelson and the rest of the offensive line to be on their A-game in future matchups against Jeffery Simmons and the Titans. Otherwise, their new quarterback will be under a lot of heat.
Fortunately, the Colts have been mostly linked to the dynamic Florida quarterback Anthony Richardson. Richardson is an elite athlete that can evade pressure and make plays with his legs, in addition to what he can do through the air.
Regardless of who is behind center for Indianapolis moving forward, this latest development obviously is not the best news for the Colts. Shane Steichen and the offensive staff will have their hands full.
