The Indianapolis Colts are focused on the 2023 NFL Draft. With their first-round selection just one week away, the priority is ensuring that their pick is right for Shane Steichen.
In the meantime, the franchise has players already on the roster to keep happy. Jonathan Taylor is among those. The superstar running back is the face of the team as it stands right now and is one of the premier players at his position in the NFL.
Therefore, Taylor's recent comments will have Colts fans feeling great. That is because the All-Pro rusher shut down any speculation about holding out for a contract extension.
Taylor had a bit of a down year with the Colts last season. He battled injuries, and Indianapolis did not enjoy the kind of season that they expected. Still, he is due for a new contract in the near future.
Drafted in the second-round of the 2020 NFL Draft, Taylor is entering the final season of his rookie deal. He has rushed for 3,841 yards and 33 touchdowns in his three seasons with the team. Despite no extension in-hand, Taylor says he won't be distracted.
"It wouldn't be a distraction to me," Taylor told the Indy Star, via NFL.com. "I'm under contract here for four years, I put the pen to the paper, so that's where I'm at right now. I have an obligation to them, and an obligation to me, but things will happen naturally."
Running back is a position that has lost significant value across the league. The wear and tear at the position is noticeable, and teams have had success without paying their ball carriers big money.
However, Jonathan Taylor is a unique talent and an important piece to the franchise. Head coach Shane Steichen and general manager Chris Ballard will be put to the test in regards to how they handle the situation.
To the comfort of Colts fans, Taylor is focused on helping his team win. All eyes are on what the Colts will do next Thursday night in Kansas City.
