Indianapolis Colts head coach Shane Steichen got his guy in the first-round of the 2023 NFL Draft. Anthony Richardson is the quarterback that the first-year head coach wants to build his offense around.

For good reason, too. Richardson features an exciting playing style and oozes with upside and potential as he makes the move from the Florida Gators to the NFL. But, the work isn't done for the Colts.

The Colts opted to use their second-round draft pick on defense, taking cornerback Julius Brents to replace Stephon Gilmore. In the third-round, Steichen went back to the offensive side as the Colts build around Richardson.

Indianapolis selected North Carolina wide receiver Josh Downs with the No. 79 overall selection in the draft. Downs provides the Colts with a talented pass-catching prospect and a weapon for Richardson to develop with as a rookie.

Downs was ranked as a top-50 prospect in the class by The Athletic NFL Draft expert Dane Brugler. Brugler notes that while the 5-8 receiver is undersized, he finds ways to get open against coverages. That could prove to be valuable for Indianapolis.

"Downs’ lack of size will face more resistance versus physical NFL coverage, but he is a tough cover in the slot one-on-one thanks to his gear changes and shifty route running," Brugler wrote. "He projects as a three-level slot weapon for an NFL offense and adds punt return value."

The North Carolina product joins a wide receiver corps led by Michael Pittman Jr., Alec Pierce, and Isaiah McKenzie. Indianapolis needed to add more youth and playmaking to the room, and Downs provides exactly that.

He totaled 2,483 yards and 22 touchdowns on 202 receptions while playing for the Tar Heels, with most of the production coming over his final two seasons. The thought of him catching passes from Anthony Richardson has to be very exciting for those inside the Indianapolis Colts.
