The Indianapolis Colts have no shortage of depth or talent at tight end. Mo Allie-Cox leads the way at the position with Jelani Woods not too far behind him for Shane Steichen and the offensive staff.
That position is one of the most loaded units on the roster heading into next season. Which is important for what Indianapolis wants to do in passing and running the ball.
Allie-Cox, Woods, and those tight ends should emerge as important targets for rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson. They are big-body weapons that can go up and get the football. Now, the Colts have added another body to the room.
Indianapolis inked former New York Giants tight end Kaden Smith this week. The move comes as offseason team activities kick off around the league. Smith was waived prior to the 2022 season and did not play last fall.
The newest Colts tight end has started 22 games in his career. He was selected by the San Francisco 49ers in the 2019 NFL Draft but actually spent his rookie campaign with the Giants.
Smith had his most productive season in the NFL during that rookie campaign. That's where he turned 31 receptions into 268 yards and three touchdowns. But it is blocking where Smith could have some upside.
Particularly in a scheme that likes to run the football, as Steichen's does. Smith may not make the roster due to the depth in the room – the Colts also drafted Will Mallory, while both Kylen Granson, Andrew Ogletree are likely to make the team – but it's a low-cost move that is worth exploring for the Colts.
