In a best-case world, the Indianapolis Colts land their franchise quarterback and an instant-impact player at a valuable position this offseason. Fortunately, that just so happens to be the case in the latest mock draft from The Athletic.
NFL analyst Diante Lee lays out a scenario in which Lamar Jackson signs an offer sheet with the Indianapolis Colts after the draft. Which would mean that Indianapolis gets to keep their No. 4 overall selection while also signing a former MVP at signal caller.
"So, in this mock draft, we’re looking at the first round through the following lens: What if Jackson accepts an offer from Indianapolis to be finalized after the draft — meaning the picks exchanged for Lamar’s new deal would be 2024 and 2025 first-rounders — and, anticipating that outcome, Baltimore goes shopping for a new quarterback," wrote Lee.
Such a situation would solve the Colts' problems at quarterback. Jackson, in this scenario, gives Shane Steichen an elite playmaker at the most important position on the field.
But that's not all that the Colts get out of this. Lee has Indianapolis bolstering their offensive line with their top-five selection. The Colts draft Paris Johnson Jr., who is the best offensive tackle in the class, after already adding Jackson
With the Colts’ acquisition of a franchise quarterback ticketed for after the draft here, Indianapolis can start stocking up on premium talent elsewhere. Its current starting tackles are Bernhard Raimann and Braden Smith, and Johnson brings more power and physical tools than either. With his 6-foot-6 frame and massive arm length, he can take over at left tackle, and head coach Shane Steichen — armed with Jackson and Jonathan Taylor in the backfield — can start designing the kind of downhill run scheme that became synonymous with the Eagles over the last two seasons.
Talk abut having your cake and eating it too. It is difficult to imagine a much better scenario for the Indianapolis Colts than the one that Diante Lee has playing out in this mock draft.
Chris Ballard and Shane Steichen have to be wondering where they could sign up for this. Jackson and a top lineman would do wonders for the trajectory of the Colts.
