The Colts have been the luckiest team in the NFL in a critical stat through the first four weeks

Teams spend all off-season building the best team they can through free agency and the NFL Draft. But no move made will ever stop an annoying element on the field that is inevitable: Luck.
The Indianapolis Colts picked up their second win of the season in Week 4 to improve to 2-2 on the year. And while they have earned both of their wins, their luck in a key stat has been a massive help.
The Colts have recovered eight of the nine fumbles they have had in their four games so far this season. The fact that the Colts offense has averaged a fumble a game through the first four weeks is less than ideal, but for what it's worth, three of the four came during one game (Week 2 vs. Green Bay Packers). The fact that they've regained possession on all four is beyond lucky.
Even if it takes skill and next-level thinking at times to make sure the defense doesn't recover the fumble. For example, the play wide receiver Ashton Dulin made during the closing minutes of the third quarter of the team's Week 2 matchup with the Packers. Where Jonathan Taylor had the ball punched out from behind after a catch out of the backfield, and Dulin made a diving play to knock the ball out of bounds instead of allowing a Packers defender to recover the fumble.
Now, I can't tell you all four of their offensive fumbles have been skill-based. As the old saying goes, sometimes it's better to be lucky than good. And I think it's safe to say the Colts have experienced some incredible fumble luck to start the year. If they continue to struggle to hold onto the ball, let's hope their luck doesn't start to run out. But I think they'd prefer to simply stop fumbling the ball.
Colts head coach shares full confidence in a struggling starter, but is it warranted
The Indianapolis Colts are 2-2, with plenty of highs and lows throughout the first four weeks of the regular season. One of their lowest lows, though, has been the play of high-dollar starting kicker Matt Gay. Even through his struggles, Colts head coach Shane Steichen still believes in his kicker. But the question now is […]
Two of the Indianapolis Colts’ most important players seem to have dodged major injures in Week 4
The Indianapolis Colts narrowly beat the Pittsburgh Steelers by a score of 27 to 24 in Week 4. They didn't leave this one unscathed, though. The team already placed key rotational defensive lineman Tyquan Lewis on the IR, starting quarterback Anthony Richardson had to leave the game early with a hip injury, and star running back Jonathan Taylor was left on […]
