The Colts might not have any other choice but to do something they've never done due to a shocking decision by an AFC South rival

The NFL is a copycat league in multiple ways.

Sometimes it's a good thing, and sometimes it puts teams in a difficult situation. And that's what seems to be happening now to the Indianapolis Colts and multiple other NFL teams after the Houston Texans' decision to give WR Jayden Higgins the first-ever fully guaranteed contract for a second-round pick.

The Colts might have to give JT Tuimoloau a fully guaranteed contract thanks to the Texans

The Colts have already been able to sign seven of their eight 2025 NFL Draft pick. The only one yet to put the pen to the paper is their second-round pick, JT Tuimoloau. The Colts drafted Tuimoloau with the 45th pick in the second round after his incredible career as an edge rusher at Ohio State.

The Texans drafted Higgins with the 34th pick in the second round, and their unprecedented decision to give him a fully guaranteed contract has already had ripple effects. The Cleveland Browns have also since given their second-round selection, Carson Schwestinger, who was drafted 33rd overall, a fully guaranteed contract. Top agents around the league are likely to try to get their clients the same thing.

So, seeing Tuimoloau remain unsigned for the Colts makes me think he could also be seeking a fully guaranteed contract. This is obviously something the Colts have never done, but with Houston now setting that precedent, teams may not have much of a choice. I would expect to see Tuimoloau signed before training camp begins, just so that the distraction is gone and he and the team can focus on using those reps to prepare and improve ahead of the 2025 season. Even though he hasn't signed the contract, that hasn't seemed to stop him from taking part in the Colts' rookie minicamp over the weekend.
