The NFL's latest victim of the league's unforgiving crackdown on player gambling was rumored to be an Indianapolis Colts player on Monday. Hours later, Destin Adams from Sports Illustrated's Horseshoe Huddle reported that the guy in question was cornerback Isaiah Rodgers Sr.
Since then, Rodgers Sr. has taken to social media with an honest and strong message about the development by stating "I want to take full responsibility for my actions."
"I know I have made some mistakes and I am willing to do whatever it takes to repair the situation," wrote the Colts fourth-year defender. "The last thing I ever wanted to do was to be a distraction to the Colts organization, my coaches, and my teammates."
You can read Rodgers Sr.'s complete statement below:
We still don't know how Isaiah will be disciplined. However, Colts fans should expect it to be very significant. Earlier this offseason, Detroit Lions WR Jameson Williams was suspended for six games for violating the policy and his teammates Quintez Cephus and C.J. Moore were given indefinite suspensions. Jacksonville Jaguars WR Calvin Ridley missed all of last season with a suspension before being reinstated this year.
The league's controversial crackdown on such violations is as understandable as they are controversial. Fans and media members pounding the table about the hypocrisy of the NFL considering its new juicy sportsbook sponsorships are missing the point.
The suspensions aren't about the league not wanting to promote betting. They are about the NFL wanting to leave no room for any sort of speculation – any AT ALL – about games being rigged or impacted by a player's actions because of bets.
Could the league do a more consistent job of disciplining players with more serious offenses? 100%. Two wrongs don't make a right, though and NFL players will have to tread very carefully if they want to risk some money even in other sports.
For now, Rodgers Sr. will join a group of players that will scare many from even registering for an account in the first place.
