NFL insider floats awful idea for Daniel Jones’ replacement that shouldn’t even be considered at this point

The Indianapolis Colts seemed to have found their QB for at least the near future in Daniel Jones, who was having arguably the best year of his career this season. His torn right Achilles injury now complicates things, though.
The team will have to weigh the risk of potentially extending Jones, who will be recovering from one of the toughest injuries athletes can face. ESPN insider Dan Graziano appears to recognize the Colts’ challenging situation, mentioning them by name as a potential landing spot for San Francisco 49ers QB Mac Jones.

“Mac Jones is under contract with the 49ers for next year at $2.8 million, but the way he played in relief of Brock Purdy this season has people wondering what it would take to trade for him (and presumably pay him more) to come in and compete for a starting role. Let me start by recognizing that Jones has been solid for the 49ers this year. He’s definitely shown the rest of the league that he deserves another shot at being a starter in the NFL. In my opinion, though, I don’t think trading for Jones or any QB makes much sense for the Colts due to their circumstances.
The Colts are already without first-round picks in 2026 and 2027 after trading for Sauce Gardner. So moving more picks for a non-guaranteed upgrade would seem foolish. I think it’s more likely that the Colts will roll with Anthony Richardson next year, with Jones on a prove-it deal, rather than trading for Jones or any other QB.
