It must be made quickly.

The Indianapolis Colts are widely expected to have a new face at quarterback next season. Whether that comes in the form of the first-round in the NFL Draft or not remains to be seen.

Still, the Colts have a major decision that must be made about Matt Ryan in the coming days. Ryan was benched midseason and the overwhelming thought is that he will probably call it a career.

While the Colts have seemingly turned the page from Ryan, his contract is still on the books. Which means Indianapolis has to move quickly to save some money and reduce the cap hit.

The Colts have until March 17 to officially make a decision – one way or another – about Ryan being on the roster or not. Assuming Indianapolis does in fact move on, the cap hit would save $17 million.

Likely the only hold up in already making this decision was the hiring of Shane Steichen and getting a full new staff in place. Now with that out of the way and the NFL Scouting Combine in the rearview mirror, this should be taken care of soon.

After that officially happens, the full focus will be on finding the franchise signal caller. Which will more than likely happen through the 2023 NFL Draft.

Indianapolis has shown interest in the top-four quarterbacks in this draft class – with all four of Bryce Young, CJ Stroud, Anthony Richardson, and Will Levis expected to be top-10 selections. The Colts currently sit at No. 4 overall but there is thought that the team could make a move up.

Then, there is the whole Lamar Jackson idea. While unlikely, the Colts would be wise to at least look into adding the former MVP quarterback to the roster since the Baltimore Ravens placed the non-exclusive tag on him.

Regardless of what happens, the Colts must move quickly to save some money. That would help them make other moves in free agency to bolster the roster for Steichen in year-one.
