The Colts nightmare 2025 NFL Draft first-round scenario is more likely to become a reality than people realize

The 2025 NFL Draft has some intriguing talent, but many believe it lacks top-tier talent. Many NFL Draft experts have inferred that only roughly 9-12 players in this class will earn a first-round grade on their boards.

A small group of players have dominated mock draft selections by fans and experts alike for the Colts. This poses the question of what the Colts would do if they all were off the board when they get on the clock at pick 14.

What will the Colts do if their nightmare board comes to fruition?

When looking at the 2025 NFL Draft class, I think only a few players make sense for the Colts to consider with their first-round pick at pick 14. The following group has often been mocked by the Colts due to their talent and ability to fit a clear need on the team's roster, and they have a legit chance of still being available when the Colts are on the clock.

  • Will Johnson, CB, Michigan
  • Tyler Warren, TE, Penn State
  • Malaki Starks, S, Georiga
  • Jalon Walker, LB/Edge, Georgia

There are 13 picks ahead of the Colts' selection, and there really aren't too many locks to be selected in the top 13. At this moment, I only have six players who I would feel comfortable saying will, without a doubt, be taken between picks 1 and 13.

  • Cam Ward, QB, Miami
  • Shedeur Sanders, QB, Colorado
  • Travis Hunter, WR/CB, Colorado
  • Abdul Carter, Edge, Penn State
  • Mason Graham, DT, Michigan

After those five, I also think it's safe to assume at least one offensive lineman will be taken inside the top 13, and I would be shocked if at least one team doesn't pull the trigger on their top WR in the class no matter if that's Arizona's Tetairoa McMillan, Missouri's Luther Burden III or even Ohio State's Emeka Egbuaka. That brings our total to seven players and six draft spots remaining in front of the Colts' selection. So, there is undoubtedly a world where all four of the Colts' ideal draft selections are off the board.

The ideal next step would be to find a lucrative trade package to trade down and gain extra selections later in the draft. But who is to say there is a team that will be willing to trade up in a class that lacks top-tier talent to warrant a trade? So, if they are forced to stay put, what is the best option available to them?

  • Reach on the best CB left
  • Upgrade their offensive line
  • Target a non-premium position (off-ball linebacker or safety)
  • Use the pick on a position that isn't a major need in order to land a more talented player (edge rusher or defensive tackle)

If I were making the pick, I would simply take the best defensive player left on the team's board. Landing talent that can instantly contribute on that side of the ball is a major need this offseason. This must be a priority if the team wants to help new defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo get started on the right foot. Below is a list of defensive prospects that I think the team should look at closely if the team's nightmare first-round board became a reality in the 2025 NFL Draft.

  • Mike Green, Edge, Marshall
  • Walter Nolen, DT, Ole Miss
  • Kenneth Grant, DT, Michigan
  • Jihaad Campbell, LB, Alabama
  • James Pearce Jr., Edge, Tennessee
  • Shavon Revel Jr., CB, East Carolina
  • Benjamin Morrison, CB, Notre Dame

The Colts seem to be telling us where on their roster they want to upgrade at before the 2025 season with a recent shocking hire

Following the 2024 season, the Indianapolis Colts decided they needed a change on the defensive side of the ball, so they parted ways with defensive coordinator Gus Bradley. After an extensive search involving multiple impressive candidates, the Colts hired Lou Anarumo as their new defensive coordinator, pointing to a drastic change in the team's defensive philosophy.  Anarumo is […]
