Just as it seemed the Indianapolis Colts were fading into irrelevancy for the 2025 season, they found a way to dominate headlines on Monday. It was announced that the Colts were flying in future Hall of Fame QB Philip Rivers for a workout on Monday night.

It shows the Colts are willing to try just about anything to give life back to their season following Daniel Jones’s season-ending Achilles injury. This obviously shocked the NFL world, and many felt that there was no shot it would actually happen. Well, Colts legend Pat McAfee seems to have just dropped a bomb, signaling that all signs point towards Rivers joining the Colts sometime today.

McAfee shares that his Colts source(s) are saying that Rivers will be announced as a Colt at some point today. Multiple insiders have already shared that Rivers looked good at his workout last night. This seemed to put the decision in Rivers’ court, with him deciding whether to come out of retirement.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and ESPN’s Stephen Holder, if rookie Riley Leonard is cleared to play Sunday, he would be the starter whether Rivers is signed or not. This move to sign Rivers would more so be insurance in case something were to happen to Leonard, with Jones and Anthony Richardson already on the IR.

Is signing Philip Rivers the right move for the Colts?

If that’s the case, I do think this makes some sense. Rivers knows Shane Steichen’s offense from their time together with the Los Angeles Chargers. He is also a friendly face for Leonard, as Rivers helped him during his draft cycle and can help the young QB prepare for this massive opportunity.

Therefore, it doesn’t feel like this move has a downside for the Colts, as they’re trying to help their young QB and give themselves insurance, given the bad injury luck at QB already this season.
