The Indianapolis Colts have made important moves this offseason in hopes of becoming contenders in the AFC. Hiring head coach Shane Steichen and drafting quarterback Anthony Richardson were the two biggest examples.
Indianapolis is looking to turn the corner offensively when next season kicks off. The Colts were hit by the injury bug last season in a big way. Star running back Jonathan Taylor and the offensive line were limited as a result.
Therefore, Pro Football Focus suggests that the Colts should go out and make a move to prevent injuries from derailing the team again. PFF outlines an addition that would potentially bolster the team up front.
With the injuries and overall down play from the offensive line in 2022, the Indianapolis Colts have question marks in the trenches entering 2023. PFF thinks that the Colts should look into signing veteran guard Gabe Jackson.
Jackson enjoyed a lengthy tenure with the Seattle Seahawks, where he was one of the better guards in the league. His play hasn't been as good in Las Vegas, but perhaps a change of scenery could do him well.
Jackson is coming off the two lowest-graded seasons of his career but was a model of consistency through his first seven NFL campaigns in Las Vegas. A 69.9 pass-blocking grade in 2020 was the worst of his run. Perhaps he can play some better football in a reserve capacity as opposed to preparing each week to be a starter.
The primary reason for this possibility is the lack of depth and overall talent that the Colts have up front. Jackson would provide proven experience and a player capable of filling a starter or reserve role for Steichen.
Indianapolis started Will Fries down the stretch in 2022, and he earned a 44.4 pass-blocking grade with 15 quarterback hurries allowed — among the most at the position over the span. It will never be a bad idea to add some offensive line depth for new franchise quarterback Anthony Richardson.
Indianapolis has a hole at the guard spot that Quenton Nelson Adding a veteran like Jackson could be exactly what the young Colts could need during the first season of a new era.
