Philip Rivers is considering another return to the NFL after retiring again, but with an AFC powerhouse and not the Colts
Philip Rivers has another return to the NFL on his mind after recently retiring for a second time, but it wouldn’t be with the Colts this time around.
If you thought Philip Rivers was going to fade in the background and out of the spotlight after the Indianapolis Colts’ season came to an end, it seems you were mistaken.
Following the Colts’ season-ending loss, Rivers reannounced his retirement and was adamant that this time it was for real. He is staying true to that, as his playing career is over. He never ruled out returning to the NFL in a different capacity, though.
The future Hall of Fame QB has officially become a candidate for the Buffalo Bills’ open head coaching job. Rivers is set to interview with the Bills on Friday as he looks to make the jump from high school head coach to the big leagues of the NFL.
Is Philip Rivers ready to be an NFL head coach?
Rivers’ three week tenure as the Colts’ starter this season showed the world a lot of things. First of all, he showed that, even at his age, he had no fear, putting on the helmet and lacing up the cleats one last time. He also showed just how valuable his football IQ remains, even at 44 years old.
It seems more and more QBs are getting away from the mental side of the position. Arm talent and athleticism have begun to take center stage, but Rivers showed that being able to read a defense and identify what is being thrown at the offense pre-snap remains an elite trait.
I believe this skill helps him be a successful head coach at the high school level, and whether it is with the Bills now or somewhere else in the future, he will be a successful NFL head coach. It may be wiser for him to land an offensive coordinator or quarterback coaching position first, but Rivers has shown he isn’t afraid to do things others view as unconventional.
From a Colts perspective, I think it is fantastic to see Rivers’ interview with the Bills. I also acknowledge how insane this would be to hear as a Bills fan right now. Rewind a couple of months, and we were calling the Colts’ choice to sign him insane. To find out more about how Bills Mafia feels about this, as well as how realistic it is that Rivers lands the job, I got some insights from A to Z Sports Bills beat writer Adam Zientek.
Will Rivers actually become the next Bills head coach?
“The Buffalo Bills weren’t kidding when they said that they weren’t going to leave any stone unturned when it comes to the head coaching search. Sean McDermott was let go after nine seasons with the organization, and some big changes are coming.
In the disastrous press conference, general manager and President of Football Operations Brandon Beane said the team would do its due diligence in the search, and the latest update from Adam Schefter is further proof. Make no mistake: this is a serious interview for the head coaching position, not just a gag to get headlines.
Rivers may not have the flash or experience as some of the other candidates interviewed or set to interview by Buffalo. The team is interviewing or set to interview Commanders run game coordinator Anthony Lynn, Colts defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo, former Giants head coach Brian Daboll, Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady, Jaguars offensive coordinator Grant Udinksi, Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver, Chargers offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel, and now former Colts quarterback and current St. Michael Catholic High School coach Philip Rivers.
Now, I don’t think Rivers is going to get the job, respectfully, because there are a handful of more qualified candidates interviewing for it. That’s not to say Buffalo won’t go in the direction of a first-time head coach taking the position, but I just can’t see it happening with Rivers.
If nothing else, the Rivers interview tells you exactly where the Bills’ head is at right now: they’re prioritizing leadership, quarterback understanding, and culture just as much as scheme. Buffalo isn’t afraid to think outside of the box, even if that means talking to a high school coach with zero NFL coaching experience.
It may not be the direction the fans ultimately want them to go, and it may not end with Rivers getting the job, but it reinforces one thing: this search is wide open. The coaching search in Buffalo is unconventional and far from finished.” – Adam Zientek, A to Z Sports Buffalo
