Philip Rivers has one more hurdle before he can return to his job as a high school head coach after the Colts’ season ends
Philip Rivers plans to return to his role as a high school head coach after the Colts’ season, but to do that, he will have to turn down a potential dream job first.
Following today’s game, Indianapolis Colts QB Philip Rivers has announced that he will re-enter retirement for good this time. He plans to return to his role as a high school head coach in Alabama, where he will coach two of his sons in 2026. However, it appears that one more hurdle is forming that he will have to avoid to regain that position.
NFL insider Ian Rapoport has reported that multiple teams have begun researching Rivers and are at least intrigued by the thought of interviewing the future Hall of Fame QB for their open head coaching positions. Now the question is, will Rivers be able to turn down such a great opportunity to return home to coach his two sons?
NFL teams are interested in interviewing Philip Rivers for their head coaching openings
After seeing his off-the-charts football IQ help him still perform at a respectable level at 44 years old and five years removed from his last NFL start; teams want to bring Rivers into their building. Not as their starting QB, though, instead as their head football coach.
I personally think Rivers would be fantastic in the role, and I think being an NFL coach would seem like a natural fit down the line. I personally doubt he would choose to do that now, though. He only considered returning to the NFL each year after his high school season ended. Accepting an NFL coaching job would require him to leave his current role altogether, and that doesn’t seem to be something he’s willing to do.
In addition to coaching his oldest son once again, he will also be able to coach his second-oldest son for the first time in high school. For one year only, his sons will be teammates, and that doesn’t sound like something he has any interest in missing out on. Down the line, though, I wouldn’t be shocked at all to see Rivers return to the NFL as a coach and eventually land a head coaching job.
