Philip Rivers’ former teammate reveals another element that likely led to the Colts’ controversial decision to sign the QB
The Colts’ decision to sign Philip Rivers makes a lot more sense when you hear what one of his former teammates just revealed.
The Indianapolis Colts’ decision to sign Philip Rivers has been met with considerable criticism this week. The team signed the 44-year-old QB to their practice squad, and many believe he is going to be named their starter for their Week 15 matchup with the Seattle Seahawks.
Former NFL MVP Cam Newton was upset and offended that the Colts didn’t contact him before signing Rivers. Newton is eight years younger than Rivers and, without a doubt, is more mobile today than Rivers ever was in his entire career. There are multiple reasons he wasn’t as good a fit for the Colts now, though, and one of Rivers’ former teammates shared another.
Former Chargers DB Quentin Jammer takes fans behind the curtain and it shows why the Colts signed Philip Rivers
Quentin Jammer played in the NFL for 12 seasons beginning in 2002 with the San Diego Chargers. He spent 11 of those years with the Chargers, and from 2004 to 2012, Rivers was his QB. In his final two seasons there, Shane Stiechen joined the Chargers coaching staff.
Jammer shared that Steichen had a bit more responsibility than his title as a defensive assistant would suggest, by saying, “Steichen ran our scout team offense against us every day at practice while Phillip was a young charger.” He also shut down the notion that it was disrespectful to choose Rivers over Newron by saying, “It’s literally got nothing to do with Cam at all. Phil is plug and play.”
I couldn’t agree more with Jammer. The Colts were in a desperate spot after losing starter Daniel Jones to a torn Achilles in Week 14. Steichen and the Colts offense needed someone they could trust as they tried to revive their season. Steichen and Rivers are as close as ever, and multiple of Rivers’ Colts teammates remain on the roster, such as Michael Pittman Jr., Jonathan Taylor, and Quenton Nelson. This move is unorthodox and has a minimal chance of working, but it is not hard to see why he was their best available option.
