The Indianapolis Colts are sitting in a very odd position as we inch towards week 1 of the NFL regular season.
Yesterday, immediately following roster cuts the Colts only had three active wide receivers on their roster.
Following some roster manipulation, the Colts would re-sign Isaiah McKenzie, who they released just hours prior.
That brings the number of current active wide receivers on the roster to four.
Those names are second-year player Alec Pierce, rookie Josh Downs, Michael Pittman Jr., and of course, Isaiah McKenzie.
This is still a baffling number of wide receivers on the active roster.
It should be noted that the Colts did put in a waiver claim on Elijah Higgins, who was cut from the Cardinals. However, they lost out on priority.
No other waiver claims have been reported so we're working under the assumption the Colts are sticking with four wide receivers (at least for the time being).
As a whole, the league operated out of 11 personnel (1 TE, 1 RB, 3 WR) over 60% of offensive snaps. The Colts in particular, operated out of 11 personnel 77.8% of the time.
To run three-receiver sets, you need some kind of depth. You need to be able to rotate players, give them time to catch their breath, and save some wear on them to prevent injury. The Colts currently have no depth.
The Colts do currently have five tight ends on their depth chart, so are we just about to see an abnormally large amount of personnel groupings with three or more tight ends?
Or do we see the Colts attempt to scrape the bottom of the barrel and find some wide receivers to bring in?
The options are slim.
