The Indianapolis Colts decided to announce at the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine that they plan to have an open quarterback competition in training camp.
This has led many to wonder who the team will bring in to compete with Anthony Richardson. The most popular name mentioned by NFL insiders from conversations at the combine is Daniel Jones, who many believe to be the Colts' top option. But the news of Sam Darnold now expected to not return to the Minnesota Vikings creates a wrinkle.
A clear competitor to the Colts signing Daniel Jones has appeared

One of the worst-kept secrets surrounding the Colts when speaking to people in Indianapolis during the combine was that the team has significant interest in signing Daniel Jones this offseason. The New York Giants drafted Jones with the first pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, and he spent five years as the team's starter before being released after ten games into his sixth season.
His career has been rocky, which has made him a pretty polarizing player. Many around the league still think he has a lot of potential and is someone people think could have a career resurgence if he lands in the right situation. The top two teams expected to pursue him not are the Colts and the Vikings, both of which would be offering him similar opportunities.
Both have young former first-round QBs on the roster in, Anthony Richardson and JJ McCarthy, and publically would allow him to compete to be named the starter for 2025. Whether either team will admit it, Jones would have an up hill battle to actually win the job. He would be an excellent backup for both teams and would give either spot a reliable player to lean on if Richardson or McCarthy were to get hurt. Which is what their actual main priority for their veteran QB signing seems to be. In the end, I think the team that does the best job convincing him that he has a chance to win the starting job will likely land the veteran QB.
Colts gain the ultimate defensive chess piece in a new 2025 NFL Mock Draft and it would point at an obvious offseason move
The Indianapolis Colts seem to be approaching an offseason, with improving their defense believed to be a primary focus. They are moving towards a new defensive philosophy, which creates some pretty glaring needs. One of which would be the possibility of adding a playmaker in the middle of the defense who can do it all. […]
