The Colts were just reminded after the season that they failed Philip Rivers during his short time with the team

If the Colts didn’t fold under pressure and fail Philip Rivers, he might have some nice hardware in his possession right now.

The Indianapolis Colts shocked the entire football world when they chose to sign Philip Rivers after a five-year retirement.

They took it a step further by naming him their starter for three weeks. Many watching him choose to come back, put on the helmet and cleats, and play in an NFL game felt like it was a truly inspiring sight. It seems it especially caught the eye of one NFL award voter.

During Thursday’s NFL Honors ceremony, the results for the Comeback Player of the Year award were announced. Rivers didn’t bring home the hardware but did receive a vote. That was without him, even winning a game in his comeback attempt. Imagine if the Colts didn’t let the future Hall of Famer down in his very first start.

San Francisco 49ers RB Christian McCaffery is this year’s winner of the NFL’s Comeback Player of the Year. He returned from an injury, which has been a common way for people to win the award.

Rivers winning would have been crazy to some, but when you sit back and think about it, I do think it could have been the most actual use of the Comeback Player of the Year award ever. If the Colts had gotten a win during his tenure, I do believe Rivers would have given McCaffrey a run for his money.

The Colts had a prime chance in Rivers’ first start on the road to take on the now NFC champion Seattle Seahawks. Rivers led the Colts to a go-ahead field goal with only 47 seconds left. If they just hold on and win that game, who knows if the Colts can go on a run to end the year to somehow win multiple games with Rivers.

Instead, the Colts let the Seahawks get into field goal range to hit a game-winning field goal of their own. And Indianapolis went on to lose out and miss the playoffs. Just one win, and this Rivers experience would be one of the most memorable sports stories in quite some time.

If they win that game we probably see a Netflix movie about it, definitely a 30 for 30. And more importantly, I think we would have seen Rivers have a real shot at winning the Comeback Player of the Year award.

Rivers’ display of courage and competitiveness to make an NFL return at 44 years old deserved better than losing all three games. Down in Seattle, the Colts had their chance, and they didn’t do enough to repay Rivers for what he did for them.
