A devasting Week 16 loss just got even worse for the Indianapolis Colts.
The team announced Tuesday afternoon have placed starting safety Julian Blackmon on the injured reserve.
This is a massive loss for the Colts defense and already struggling secondary. Blackmon is trusted with many roles in Gus Bradley's defense that no one player will likely be able to fill. Blackmon was having a great season to date as he was among the team's leaders in multiple key stats.
- 4 interceptions (1st)
- 88 total tackles (3rd)
- 8 pass deflections (1st)
- 2 fumbles recovered (1st)
Without Blackmon, the Colts secondary is about to get even younger as they will turn to 2nd-year safeties Nick Cross and Rodney Thomas II to carry the load. This will pair with the team already starting two rookies at their boundary CB positions in, Juju Brents and Jaylon Jones.
There is going to be even more pressure on the Colts defensive line to get pressure on the QB, to take stress off their young secondary. Blackmon is now set to miss at least the next four weeks on IR. If his injury heals in that time span, it would have him out the final two weeks of the season as well as the first two weeks of the playoffs.
