Colts: Free agent signing tabbed as one of best bargains
A smart move by the Colts.
The Indianapolis Colts have not been too active in free agency. But, the front office did go out and add an outside free agent that has the chance to make an impact.
Samson Ebukam inked with the Colts early in free agency on a three-year, $24 million deal. The deal was made as the Colts look to bolster the trenches, and Ebukam should be able to do just that.
Ebukam enjoyed a bit of a breakout season with the San Francisco 49ers this past season. He made 36 total tackles, seven tackles-for-loss, and 13 quarterback hits in 2022. Additionally, Ebukam added five sacks, too.
It was an underrated pickup for the Colts. Especially since the big storyline that everybody is focused on is who Indianapolis will draft at the quarterback position in April.
However, some are taking notice of the signing. In fact, Doug Farrar of Touchdown Wire tabbed the acquisition as one of the best bargain pickups of free agency,
Ebukam was another defensive lineman who got on the good foot with Ryans running his defense — he had four decent seasons with the Los Angeles Rams, and then blew up in production with the 49ers in 2021 and 2022. Last season, he had six sacks, a career-high 50 quarterback pressures, and 28 stops.
…
Ebukam can work off that edge with all kinds of authority. … Ebukam won with technique and effort, and that’s what the Colts can expect from him, as well.
The newest Colts defender has played an outside linebacker role and at defensive end during his NFL career. In 2022, he generated one of the highest pressure rates in the entire league.
That should point to some needed success for Indianapolis. Especially when playing alongside the likes of DeForest Buckner, Kwity Paye, and company up front.
Ebumam really looks to be coming into his own. And that is fantastic news for the Indianapolis Colts.
