The Indianapolis Colts addressed their biggest need of the offseason with its first-round selection of the 2023 NFL Draft. Shane Steichen has his quarterback of the future in the exciting Anthony Richardson.
With that out of the way, the attention quickly turned to filling other needs on the roster. Thanks to an early second-round pick, Indianapolis was able to do just that with talented prospects still on the board.
Steichen and general manager Chris Ballard used the No. 44 overall selection – after trading back a couple of times on Kansas State defensive back Julius Brents. That's a pick that fills a hole on the roster with a player that can play right away as a rookie.
Brents is one of the best defensive back prospects in this draft class. He is a big corner with a 6-2 and 200-pound build. The newest Colts' draft pick began his career at Iowa before transferring over to Kansas State.
That's where he really emerged as an NFL player. Brents played his final two seasons on the collegiate level with the Wildcats, becoming a major contributor on a Big 12 championship squad in 2022.
At Kansas State, Brents grabbed five interceptions, showcasing his ballskills and playmaking ability. Four of those occurred last season, resulting in first-team All-Big 12 honors on a Wildcats squad that won the conference.
This selection is painting a theme of how the Colts want to operate in the NFL Draft. Anthony Richardson is a high-level athlete that turned heads at the scouting combine. Brents impressed in his testing, too.
Brents scored a 9.99 out of 10 in the Relative Athletic Score. He jumped 41.5 inches in the vertical jump, clocked in an impressive 6.63 three-cone drill, and ran a 4.53 40-yard dash.
It's clear that Steichen and Ballard are putting an emphasis on athletes in this year's draft. The selection of Julius Brents is more evidence in the Indianapolis Colts following a theme this weekend.
