Shane Steichen is entering his first season as head coach for the Indianapolis Colts. He comes over after leading the Philadelphia Eagles' offense for the past two seasons under Nick Sirianni.
Steichen and the Eagles enjoyed a good amount of offensive success, especially last season. The scheme helped unlock quarterback Jalen Hurts, and the rushing attack was lethal for defenses to deal with.
Fortunately, Steichen will be able to bring some of the same things over to Indianapolis and apply it to the Colts. And even better, he has brought an underrated weapon with him to his new job.
That underrated weapon is free agent acquisition Gardner Minshew. Minshew signed with the Colts this offseason after two seasons with the Eagles. There, he played in nine games while backing up Hurts.
But even more importantly, Minshew was learning Steichen's offense in the process. Which has the opportunity to pay off big for the Colts as soon as next season. Especially when it comes to Anthony Richardson.
“I get a lot of questions from guys and just try to help, send guys in the right direction as much as possible," Minshew said of teaching his teammates the scheme. "Just having experience in the offense, I think it helps being able to converse some of those things we actually had in games, practices and such.”
Even if Minshew does not start the season for the Colts, his experience and knowledge of the offense will be vital. He has played four seasons in the NFL and will be able to accelerate Richardson's knowledge of what Steichen is asking him to do.
That's a big, underrated weapon for the Colts as they transition a new era with a new face of the franchise. The quicker that Anthony Richardson is comfortable in the offense, the better for the Indianapolis Colts.
