The Indianapolis Colts had an injury-riddled 2022 NFL season. From running back Jonathan Taylor to offensive lineman Quenton Nelson to linebacker Shaquille Leonard, the Colts were without several key contributors.

Now, as the franchise transitions to a new era with fresh starts at head coach and quarterback, the hope is that the injury bug stays away in 2023. Colts head coach Shane Steichen provided an important update regarding the health of one of the biggest names on the roster.

That would be Leonard, who emerged as one of the best linebackers in the league early in his career with the Colts. But he recorded less than 80 snaps last season, and his loss was felt for the defense,

Leonard has had to undergo a pair of back injuries in a five-month span. That in itself is a troubling development, especially for a player that plays a high-contact position like linebacker. But there is hope that he can make a return to the field sooner than later.

Steichen was asked about Leonard and what his status was this week. Leonard, of course, is not participating in OTAs as he recovers from the surgeries. The Colts head coach made it known that Leonard is "progressing well."

“He’s progressing well," Steichen told the media about the star linebacker. "Again, I don’t have a timetable right now for you on that, but he’s progressing well. He’s doing a nice job.”

It's difficult to read too much into that kind of update. There's only so much for Steichen to say at this point. However, it is at least a bit promising that Steichen is seeing Leonard progressing in a position way.
