The Indianapolis Colts and AFC South may be in for a big shock, as a developing story implicates Colts cornerback Isaiah Rodgers in an alleged sports betting scandal.
The news first reported by Matt Rybaltowski of SportsHandle.com suggested that a current member of the Indianapolis Colts was under investigation for "pervasive wagering activities." The allegation claimed that the player, who was then anonymous, had placed hundreds of wagers, including some bets on Colts games.
Colts beat writer Destin Adams later reported that Isaiah Rodgers Sr., an up-and-coming cornerback and projected 2023 starter, is the player under investigation.
Just a few weeks ago, Pro Football Focus named Rodgers the "most underrated player" on the Colts. Rodgers was fifth among all qualified cornerbacks in coverage grade in 2022 while also being a prominent special teams threat and returner.
Not only that, but Rodgers is a key presence in a young Indianapolis secondary coming off a career year. The Colts still have Kenny Moore II, but rookies Julius Brents, Darius Rush, and Jaylon Jones should all get some snaps. That group gets even younger if Rodgers was to miss significant time.
In April, five NFL players headlined by Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams received suspensions for for violating the league’s gambling policy. We then heard in a May report from ESPN that a second wave of investigations could be expected.
If the league does find that Rodgers gambled on games, especially games in which he played, the former Colts sixth-round pick would be looking at a significant suspension. Perhaps even for an entire season, which would shake things up drastically in Indy.
