The Indianapolis Colts, like much of the NFL, has kicked off offseason team activities this week. While the activities are all voluntary, it's a good opportunity for players to get work in with one another.

Especially for the Colts, with head coach Shane Steichen taking over. Additionally, Indianapolis is in the process of developing a rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson. Therefore, the more reps, the better for Indianapolis.

Indianapolis was without one of their stars when OTAs kicked off. Wide receiver Michael Pittman, who is eligible for a contract negotiation, was not in attendance. But he has a very good excuse that everybody will love.

Pittman's wife gave birth this week, just before the Colts opened OTAs. Therefore, he smartly opted to be around his family rather than his teammates. It's a special moment for the Pittman family.

The Colts wide receiver is due for an extension this offseason, and that's undoubtedly one of the top items on the to-do list for the franchise. In the meantime, he's able to celebrate a different kind of moment.

Indianapolis went on with their practice without him. Anthony Richardson and Gardner Minshew split first-team reps in OTAs while throwing to the rest of the pass catchers on the roster.

Once Pittman is back in the fold, he will have the opportunity to develop an on-field connection with Richardson. The two will need to be in a rhythm in the passing game if the Colts are going to contend in a competitive AFC South next season.

Nevertheless, it's a big moment for Pittman and his family. And it's the best excuse possible to miss a practice. Shane Steichen has to be thrilled for his playmaking wideout.
