There has been a lot of positive smoke surrounding the Indianapolis Colts and the 2023 NFL Draft. Much of which is centered around the Houston Texans potentially passing on a quarterback at No. 2 overall.
If that does play out, ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter believes that Indianapolis may very well have their pick of the litter at their No. 4 overall selection. Which would obviously be a dream scenario for head coach Shane Steichen and general manager Chris Ballard.
However, there may be a chance that the Texans are setting the Colts up in hopes of spoiling their division rival's draft plans. At least, that's one what one media member thinks is a possibility.
Pro Football Focus analyst Trevor Sikkema brought up the wild theory on Twitter. His theory is that perhaps the Texans are leaking the possibility of passing on a quarterback to give the Colts a false sense of security.
By doing so, the Colts wouldn't feel the need to move up in the draft order to ensure that they get one of their guys at signal caller. Which would therefore open the door of Indianapolis getting stuck with their fourth-ranked player at the position.
It does make some sense, at least on the surface. Houston has a big need at quarterback, and it would be difficult to pass on one of the two best passers in the class in favor of defense. Plus, it would not be a bad idea to sabotage a division rival's draft strategy.
Of course, this does seem a bit much. The Texans are likely only focused on their own plans and what they will do to ensure that head coach DeMeco Ryans has a good foundation to build on in his first draft. Still, it's at least worth thinking about.
Fortunately, signs point to the Indianapolis Colts sitting in a good position to come out of the first-round with one of their top-ranked players. That would be a great outcome for first-year head coach Shane Steichen.
