The Indianapolis Colts were hit with some unfortunate news when reports surfaced that Isaiah Rodgers would be suspended for the full 2023 NFL season after violating the league's gambling policy.
Which meant that Indianapolis would be without one of its important starters moving forward. Then, the Colts opted to rip the bandaid completely off by releasing Rodgers and closing that chapter.
Therefore, the attention now turns to adding depth in the backend of the defense. Indianapolis has some exciting youth with rookies Julius Brents and Darius Rush set for key roles. But, there are some free agents for Indy to consider.
We outline a few defensive backs that are on the free agent market that are worth the Colts looking into. The list is led by accomplished players that could provide needed experience for a young secondary.
Marcus Peters comes to mind immediately. The former Baltimore Ravens defender is a ball hawk that is seemingly always making plays. A recent injury history will probably prevent him from getting back to his prime level, but the talent is there for him to bring valuable depth to the table.
Eli Apple fits the same bill. A defensive back that has played in the Super Bowl with the Cincinnati Bengals, Apple is used to the big stage. His aggressive style of play leads to big plays for the other team at times, but he offers enough ability to take a gamble on until Brents and Rush are ready for starting roles.
Finally, Kyle Fuller is another name that has some intrigue. He is coming off a torn ACL, which will create some pause, but he has an All-Pro selection on his resume and can play a few different roles in the secondary. How much left in the tank that he has is the big question.
Ultimately, there are options for the Indianapolis Colts. Long-term, Brents and Rush look like the future. But these three free agents could slide in and fill needs for Indianapolis in the meantime.
