Former first-round pick Daniel Jones signed with the team to compete with Anthony Richardson to be the team's starting quarterback. Some may say if you enter training camp with a legit QB competition, your season is off the rails before it can even begin. The Colts have a plan with this move, but I don't think it's what everyone else expects.
What does the signing of Daniel Jones mean for Anthony Richardson's future in Indianapolis?

Last season, the Colts shocked the rest of the league when they chose to bench Richardson in favor of veteran Joe Flacco. At the time, they felt that Flacco gave the team the best chance to win games. Later, they backtracked from this reasoning by explaining that Richardson's weekly process as a pro was the main problem.
His benching ultimately lasted two weeks before the team reinserted Richardson into the starting lineup. After the benching, his teammates and coaches shared how much improvement they saw from his preparation and dedication in the building. It led to improvement in the field as well. He appeared in five games after returning from the benching in Weeks 11, 12, 13, 15, and 16. The Colts won three of these five games, and he accounted for nine total touchdowns during that stretch, four through the air and five on the ground. He threw for 856 yards and rushed for 257.
The Colts felt like the benching in the end helped to bring out a better version of their young QB. This move of signing Daniel Jones feels like the team trying to take what they learned in the short benching experiment into a full training camp battle. I think Richardson is still entering training camp with the clear upper hand and the leader in the building to be the team's starter. Giving Richardson extra motivation as he works on his game this offseason could help him to leave, no doubt, and come training camp that he is the best QB on the Colts roster. NFL insider Albert Breer shared similar thoughts on the situation in a recent article he released.
"While we’re on the Colts, I think the context on the Jones signing is this: They felt like benching Anthony Richardson last year, with Joe Flacco taking his job, lit a fire under the 2023 No. 4 pick. And so Indy hopes bringing in Jones will push Richardson to finally turn the corner."
