Under the radar Colts players to keep your eye on during Training Camp

Rookie and veteran players for the Indianapolis Colts are set to report for Training Camp on July 24. There are players who will have everyone's eyes on them, for example, Anthony Richardson, Jonathan Taylor, and members of the team's 2024 rookie class. But there are three under-the-radar players I'm intrigued to watch during Training Camp, and […]

There are players who will have everyone's eyes on them, for example, Anthony Richardson, Jonathan Taylor, and members of the team's 2024 rookie class. But there are three under-the-radar players I'm intrigued to watch during Training Camp, and I suggest you keep an eye on them as well.

Three under-the-radar Colts players to watch during Training Camp

Isaiah Land, Edge

Isaiah Land joined the Colts off of waivers last year after spending the 2023 Training Camp with the Dallas Cowboys. He was one of the Cowboys' final cuts to get down to their 53-man roster. The undrafted rookie had stood out during the preseason and camp with the Cowboys. Many of their fans were upset and shocked to see the team choose to release the pass rusher.

His rookie season was mostly spent watching on the sideline, with him only being made active for seven games during the regular season. The Colts' edge room has only gotten more crowded this season, with the team drafting Laiatu Latu in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft. But the Colts saw a lot of upside in Land, so I'm not counting him out of a roster spot just yet. After adding Land, Colts GM Chris Ballard spoke about why the team claimed him off of waivers.

"We wanted to add some speed off the edge, he's a guy we really liked him in the draft. He ended up going undrafted and ended up in Dallas, showed us enough, that we said lets take a shot and get him in here. His head coach in college Willie Sims is a good friend and a good guy. He's been beating on the table telling us what he thinks his potential is."

Ameer Speed, CB

Like Land, CB Ameer Speed is a player who didn't spend last Training Camp with the Colts. The New England Patriots drafted Speed with the 214th pick in the sixth round of the 2023 NFL Draft. He made the Patriots initial 53-man roster and appeared in five games with the team as a rookie. But the Patriots waived the rookie CB on October 19, and the Colts rewarded him off of waivers on October 20 ahead of Week 7 matchup with the Cleveland Browns.

After joining the Colts, Speed appeared in eight games, with all but two of his snaps coming from special teams. He now enters the year with the Colts and will get to take part in his first Training Camp with the team. There is expected to be a competitive battle to make the team's roster at CB, with about five players in line to compete for two to three jobs. Speed made multiple plays on special teams as a rookie, which will be an important aspect for whichever CBs win the jobs.

Jake Witt, OT

The Colts drafted Jake Witt with the 236th pick in the seventh round of the 2023 NFL Draft. His unique path to the NFL had many intrigued to watch him as a rookie, but unfortunately, his season ended before Training Camp ended, with the team placing him on the IR. But the Colts didn't draft Witt for what he could do as a rookie. It was about the level of player they believed he could develop into.

The Colts have prioritized young players for the depth of their offensive line. The team drafted Matt Goncalves and Tanor Bortolini in the 2024 NFL Draft, as well as Blake Freeland, who will be entering his second NFL season. It won't be easy for Witt to make the Colts 2024 roster, but if he can show improvement from last year, as well as flashing the potential the Colts and many others saw in him, he easily could enter 2024 on the team's 53-man roster.

A dark horse candidate who could steal a roster spot during the Colts 2024 Training Camp

Multiple intriguing roster battles are incoming for the Indianapolis Colts 2024 Training Camp.  This offseason, the Colts prioritized signing their own free agents, and as a result, they didn't lose a single projected starter for the upcoming season. But one of their biggest losses was seeing backup RB Zack Moss sign with the Cincinnati Bengals.  So […]

The Colts top 5 2024 undrafted rookies ahead of training camp

The Indianapolis Colts didn't utilize the UDFA market as much in 2024 as in past years. However, multiple players will enter Training Camp with real aspirations of making the team's 53-man roster.  During Training Camp, I will be tracking the team's UDFA class and ranking who I believe to be the team's top five in what […]
