The Indianapolis Colts stayed fairly quiet during last week's first wave of NFL free agency.

But now we head into wave two,  an area where the Chris Ballard-led Colts typically thrive.

So, I will be sharing the best players still available at positions I believe the Colts are still in need of a move ahead of the 2024 season.

This article will focus on the best available free agents that fit the Colts' need for free safety.

Best Free Safety free agent options:

Justin Simmons, Denver Broncos

Just before free agency began, the safety position saw a wild change as teams released multiple productive starters. None is more surprising to me than Broncos-related star safety Justin Simmons. I had Simmons ranked as my second-best free agent FS in this year's class, only behind Xavier McKinney, who signed a massive $17-million-a-year deal with the Green Bay Packers.

Simmons has an impressive 30 interceptions and 64 pass deflections over his eight-year NFL career. The Colts desperately need better play out of the FS position next season, as it is such an important part of Gus Bradley's defense. While Simmons will turn 31 next season, he is arguably the best fit to fill this spot for the Colts, but he will likely be pricey.

Quandre Diggs, Seattle Seahawks

Like Simmons, Quandre Diggs was released by his former team ahead of free agency. He just turned 31 in January and is coming off a season of regression in his play. He had one interception and five pass deflections, which ended his three-year stint of stellar play in which he had 14 interceptions and 24 pass deflections. If the Colts think he can return to his Pro Bowl self from 2020-2022, he would be a cheaper option than Simmons but arguably just as productive.

Eddie Jackson, Chicago Bears

Another safety released by their former team this offseason is Eddie Jackson. Like Diggs, Jackson had a bit of a regression year in 2023, but he also has missed at least five games over the last two seasons. He had one interception and five pass deflections. While Jackson isn't as solid of an option as either Simmons or Diggs, he would be a drastic improvement from what they had last season.

Sources say Indianapolis Colts and Pro Bowler Quandre Diggs have mutual interest

The initial wave of NFL free agency is over, but that doesn't mean teams are done exploring additional moves.  That's the exact case with the Indianapolis Colts. Sources tell A to Z Sports that the Colts and three-time Pro Bowl safety Quandre Diggs have mutual interest in playing together. It was made clear earlier that […]
