The Indianapolis Colts sit in a bit of a dangerous spot while sitting at No. 4 overall in the 2023 NFL Draft.
Because there is a scenario that exists where the first three selections are all quarterbacks. Leaving Indianapolis with the fourth best option in the class. That isn't a position that teams want to find themselves in.
However, the Colts do not seem to be lacking any kind of confidence. Despite speculation that a QB-needy team could jump them by trading with the Arizona Cardinals at No. 3. They aren't showing their cards or panicking about the situation.
ESPN NFL Draft analyst Matt Miller referenced the thought that the first two picks will be at QB, with Bryce Young and CJ Stroud going in whatever order. That would take two targets out of the equation right off the bat.
With the intrigue surrounding Florida's Anthony Richardson, that could mean that three passers are gone before the Colts even have the chance to make their selection. Yet, Miller is reporting that the talk is around the Colts not trading up.
What we're hearing about the Colts' draft: There's belief Bryce Young (Alabama) and C.J. Stroud (Ohio State) will be off the board by pick No. 4, but there's also considerable chatter Indy will not trade up to secure a passer, even just one spot. But with Gardner Minshew, Nick Foles and Sam Ehlinger on the roster right now, it seems likely the Colts will leave the first round with their future QB starter even if they stay home at No. 4. They need a Day 1 starter from this rookie class, too, and Levis is currently ahead of Anthony Richardson (Florida) for Indianapolis, according to sources close to the team, because he's more likely to be able to play right away. — Miller
Furthermore, Miller wrote that sources indicate that the team would actually prefer Kentucky's Will Levis, given to the belief that Levis can play right away in the NFL. Levis is generally regarded to be the fourth best passer in the class.
Therefore, the Indianapolis Colts do not appear to be worried about where they sit in the draft order. Miller's reporting suggests that the front office and coaching staff are confident with who they will come away with in the draft.
That's a great sign with the 2023 NFL Draft just two weeks away. Especially when you factor in that there's smoke about the Houston Texans not being a lock to take a quarterback, after all.
