Colts work out a group of players at a position where the team’s starter had a rough day during its Week 2 win over the Broncos
Colts show they are self aware of a problem present on their roster after Week 2 win.
The Indianapolis Colts won a thriller in Week 2 against the Denver Broncos. The game went to the final second, as the Colts walked it off with a 45-yard field goal to win 29-28. Even with the win, a big problem on their roster was revealed during the game.
The Colts were without star cornerback Charvarius Ward on Sunday, which propelled Xavien Howard into the top CB spot, and things didn’t go well for the veteran. The Broncos looked at him like a bullseye, targeting him often throughout the game. The Colts seem to have taken notice of this, so they worked out multiple CBs following their win.

The Colts worked out seven players ahead of their Week 3 matchup against the Tennessee Titans. Six of which were cornerbacks, which tells us they know they need more playable options at the position going forward. The final player, interestingly enough, was a center.
Of the group of corners worked out by the Colts, two stand out. The first being former Dolphins DB Nik Needham, who has appeared in 63 games and logged 27 starts. Needham has solid size at the position at 6-1 and is still only 28, so it could make sense as an addition for the Colts.
The other is Tre Flowers, who spent a game with the Colts last season. Flowers was drafted in the fifth round by the Seattle Seahawks and has spent time at cornerback and safety during his career. He’s appeared in nearly 100 games and logged 44 starts, and at 6-3, would add tremendous size to the Colts’ CB room.
The Colts still have an open spot on their roster since placing Jaylon Jones on IR, so if they choose to add someone from this tryout or another free agent, they wouldn’t necessarily have to release Howard. His showing on Sunday, though, made it clear they need options they can trust if he struggles again.
