Updated look at the Indianapolis Colts' 2023 draft picks
The Colts are in a great spot to finally land their quarterback of the future
2022 is in the Indianapolis Colts' rearview mirror and for good reason: A 4-12-1 record that included firing the head coach during the season is something no franchise ever wants to go through.
But 2023 is a new day. And one silver lining of last year's disaster is the Colts own the fourth overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. To make things even better, there are some very good quarterback candidates for them to choose from.
Overall, the Colts have eight total picks, including two in both the fifth- and seventh-rounds.
They are below:
- Round 1, Pick 4 overall
- Round 2, Pick 35 overall
- Round 3, Pick 79 overall (from WAS)
- Round 4, Pick 106 overall
- Round 5, Pick 140 overall
- Round 5, Pick 164 overall
- Round 7, Pick 223 overall
- Round 7, Pick 238 overall (from TB)
The Colts are not expected to receive any compensatory picks, per Over The Cap.
Indianapolis' third-rounder is result of the Carson Wentz trade from a year ago. Pick No. 238 stems from the trade with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers that landed the pick and linebacker Grant Stuard. It cost the Colts their 2023 sixth-rounder.
It will be interesting to see what the Colts do with the fourth-overall pick. The Chicago Bears do not need a quarterback, therefore, they have all the reason in the world to trade back because every single team that's inside the top-10 outside of Arizona could use a franchise quarterback.
And there are plenty of them.
But the kicker is the fact that the Houston Texans are currently picking second overall and they are one of the teams that need a quarterback. It's completely logical to assume the Colts aren't going to want to sit back and potentially watch their division rival snag their top guy. Therefore, a trade with the Bears seems almost certain.
I mean, I'd say the Colts did OK the last two times they took a QB at No. 1 overall.
