Not every former Indianapolis Colts player is loved by the fan base after they depart the team.

But fans love some players so much that they continue to be rooted for in Indianapolis long after they are gone. That is the case for Nyheim Hines, who is now set to be a free agent after the news of his release from the Cleveland Browns.

The Colts drafted running back Nyheim Hines in the fourth round of the 2018 NFL Draft. He spent four full years with the team before being traded to the Buffalo Bills after seven games into his fifth season in 2022. He appeared in 72 games during his time with the Colts and recorded 1,202 yards and 10 touchdowns on 306 carries.

Since being traded away, Hines spent one more season in Buffalo, though he didn't see any on-field action due to a freak jet ski accident that led to Hines suffering a torn ACL. Hines signed with the Browns ahead of the 2024 season, but his recovery from his injury proved to be tougher than expected. He could not get healthy enough to be elevated to the active roster and spent another year on the IR. In total, Hines has only appeared in nine games since being traded away by the Colts.

Now, he will again be a free agent and will be looking for his fourth new team. This likely leads some to wonder if the Colts and Hines would consider a reunion. The Colts could very well look to reconstruct their RB room behind Jonathan Taylor this offseason. And his familiarity with Taylor and other members on the roster could make Hines a solid fit. However, the facts of the situation are that Hines hasn't played a down in the NFL for over two years.

So, if they elected to form a reunion, it would likely be on a one-year prove-it deal where Hines would have to compete in training camp to make the Colts roster and earn a shot at having a role for the team. The last we saw him, though, Hines was a solid threat out of the backfield in the passing game and was a dynamic return man. Two areas the Colts could certainly look to improve this offseason, but only time will tell if Hines is anywhere near the player he was the last time he was healthy.
