Tolzien was on the Colts roster for the last two years of his NFL playing career in 2016 and 2017. He was signed to backup Andrew Luck and, in 2017, was tasked with starting the year as the team's starter with Luck injured. That only lasted one game, though, as the team made a trade with the New England Patriots for Jacoby Brissett.

That one game is one Colts fans who watched will never forget, no matter how hard they try. The Colts opened the year on the road against the Los Angeles Rams, and it was a long day for them. They lost the game in blowout fashion by a score of 46 to 9. Tolzien threw two interceptions on the day, both of which were returned for touchdowns by the Rams' defense.

Two years after Tolzien's playing days ended, he began his NFL coaching career. He was hired as an offensive assistant coach in 2020 for the Dallas Cowboys, he remained in that role for three years all of which were under then offensive coordinator Kellen Moore. Ahead of the 2023 season, he was promoted to be the team's quarterbacks coach and served in that role for the past two years. He is now reuniting with Moore as the Saints quarterbacks coach in New Orleans. His time with the Colts may always be remembered negatively because of that awful display against the Rams. However, Tolzien is a well-respected offensive mind, and many around the NFL believe he has a promising career ahead of him as a coach.
