‘I know he took this personal’ – Jonathan Taylor had something extra motivating him ahead of his monster day vs. the Broncos
Jonathan Taylor had revenge on his mind, and he certainly got it during the Colts win in Week 2
The Indianapolis Colts saw their 2024 season go downhill fast after their loss to the Denver Broncos late in the year. So picking up the win over the Broncos in Week 2 likely felt like good revenge for multiple members of the team. One player, especially being star RB Jonathan Taylor.
Taylor caught a ton of flak last year after he fumbled the game away in many people’s eyes. The Colts were in the driver’s seat to pick up what would have been their most important win to date. Taylor walked in for a touchdown to give the team a three-score lead, or at least they thought he did. Further review would show that he let go of the ball too early, which resulted in a turnover, and after that, everything went the Broncos’ way. In Week 2, he got his chance to right this wrong, and boy did he.
Jonathan Taylor wanted to make up for his mistakes vs. the Broncos in 2024
Colts captain and star LB Zaire Franklin knows how good Taylor is, and knew that one low moment of his career wasn’t going to stop him from continuing to be one of the top RBs in the NFL. “I tell JT (Jonathan Taylor) that he is the best in th league,” said Franklin. He also knows that Taylor heard all of the criticism coming his way after last year’s mistake.
“I know he took this personal” said Franklin “(he) took a lot of crap from last year, I know he was looking forward to this matchup (vs. Broncos) and he did what he was supposed to do.” If “what he was supposed to do” was have a monster performance, then yeah, that is exactly what Taylor did. He finished the game with 165 rushing yards and 50 receiving yards and found the endzone once after a catch. This gave him 215 all-purpose yards and, more importantly, he made multiple big game-changing plays for the team throughout the game. He had a run for 69 yards and a reception of 43 and scored one of the team’s two touchdowns.
Taylor’s 165 rushing yards led all RBs in Week 2 and is the second most rushing yards in a game by anyone early in the season, only trailing Derrick Henry (169 in Week 1). Taylor now leads the NFL in rushing yards after two weeks with 236, and more importantly, he was able to lead the Colts to victory over the Broncos in Week 2. He successfully got his revenge, and as far as I’m concerned, his mistake in last year’s game should be forgiven by all. But whatever he channeled ahead of this performance, I think that should stay around for the rest of the season.
