The Indianapolis Colts have been front and center in the national media regarding the running back position. First, it was the entire situation unfolding with Jonathan Taylor that reached a fever pitch when it was reported he wanted a trade.
Next, Dianna Russini from ESPN started the social media firestorm when she reported that the New Orleans Saints were expected to sign both Kareem Hunt and Anthony Barr. A crazy turn of events threw the Indianapolis Colts into the mix.
Destin Adams from AtoZ Sports broke down what went down after it was reported that Hunt would be signing with the Saints and what the Colts' plans were with the controversial running back.
The team source shared with me that the Colts are "highly motivated" to get a deal done with free agent running back Kareem Hunt.
If the team is able to sign Hunt, that will be the 2nd veteran RB added since Jonathan Taylor's trade request was made official. The 1st being the signing of Kenyan Drake Friday.
Now, the team has made an official decision in the running back room, and it's not Hunt or an update on Taylor. Rather, news broke that the Colts would be signing RB Jason Huntley and TE Ricky Seals-Jones. In an alternate move, the team waived TE La'Michael Pettway and S Michael Tutsie with injury designations.
Huntley has limited experience, playing in six games for the Eagles in 2020 and 2021. In that time, he ran 18 times for 70 yards and caught one pass during his tenure. With Jonathan Taylor on the PUP list, Deon Jackson missing time, and Zack Moss' broken arm, Huntley has a chance to come in and shine. Huntley previously spent time with the Detroit Lions, Philadelphia Eagles, and Pittsburgh Steelers.
As for Seals-Jones, he hasn't seen playing time after being released by the Giants last year. In 2021, for Washington, he played in 13 games. After spending time with the Chiefs, Cardinals, and Browns, Seals-Jones has amassed 90 catches for 1044 yards and 10 touchdowns.
While this move doesn't deter the team from going after Hunt, it's hard to imagine they are going to circle back after the most recent acquisition. Crazier things have happened in the league, it's just hard to imagine bringing in another running back.
Much like Russini in her initial reporting, anything can happen.
