The Indianapolis Colts fell just short in Week 1, losing to the Houston Texans by a score of 29 to 27.

Anthony Richardson had a fantastic outing where he was one of just eight QBs with a passer rating over 100. Unfortunately for the Colts, they were the only team to have their quarterback accomplish this feat and still lose in Week 1.

Top QB Ratings during Week 1

1. Baker Mayfield, Tampa Bay Buccaneers: 146.5
2. Derek Carr, New Orleans Saints: 142.5
3. Josh Allen, Buffalo Bills: 137.7
4. C.J. Stroud, Houston Texans: 115.9
5. Sam Darnold, Minnesota Vikings: 113.2
6. Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City Chiefs: 101.9
7. Anthony Richardson, Indianapolis Colts: 101.2
8. Tua Tagovailoa, Miami Dolphins: 101.0

Each of the other seven QBs who made this list had more passing attempts than Richardson on the day and at least double the number of completions. This tells us Richardson had some accuracy issues in Week 1, but it also tells us what Richardson was able to do with just nine completions, which was pretty remarkable.

With just 19 pass attempts, Richarson completed a league-high three attempts over 50 yards. This means a third of his completed passes in Week 1 went for over 50 yards. Let me give you time to pick your jaws up from the floor. Now, it's important that Richardson can improve his ability to hit the layups and take what the defense gives him at a higher rate. But for him to be this effective as a deep ball passer is a great sign for things to come in Indianapolis.

The Colts will be kicking themselves for a while, knowing they wasted Richardson's exceptional performance. However, there are clear ways for him to improve going forward, so his best football is clearly in front of him. So, while the loss stings, I think it's important to remember that Richardson's development is priority number one for the Colts. But this game showed them that they have the type of QB that can win them any game at any time. They always have a shot, and that's a significant win for the team going forward.
