While the Indianapolis Colts lost in Week 12 to the Detroit Lions, there was a silver lining.

The current AFC South leaders, the Houston Texans, dropped a home matchup against a Tennessee Titans team many believe already have their focus toward the 2025 NFL offseason and NFL Draft.

The Texans have now lost three of their last four, and instead of putting the nail in the coffin that is the Colts' chances of winning the AFC South, they've kept it alive, and now they have the chance to make them pay.

The Colts have the chance to win the AFC South even after being swept by the Texans

The Colts currently sit two full games behind the Texans in the AFC South standings, and due to being swept, they are three games out of first place. With five games remaining, it seems like that is a massive gap for the Colts to make up. The one reason this option seems even slightly plausible is the schedule remaining for both teams.

Texans' final five games
Week 13: @ Jacksonville Jaguars
Week 14: Bye Week
Week 15: Vs. Miami Dolphins
Week 16: @ Kansas City Chiefs
Week 17: Vs. Baltimore Ravens
Week 18: @ Tennessee Titans

Colts' final five games
Week 13: @ New England Patriots
Week 14: Bye Week
Week 15: @ Denver Broncos
Week 16: Vs. Tennessee Titans
Week 17: @ New York Giants
Week 18: Vs. Jacksonville Jaguars

Can lightning strike for a third time in the race to win the AFC South?

The top team in the AFC South fumbling this large of a lead would seem impossible to some, but I point towards the last two years where the exact same thing happened in this very division.

Last season, the Jaguars seemed to have a strong hold on the division title. Heading into Week 13, the Jaguars had a division-best 8-3 record and went on to lose five of their final six games to finish 9-6. Their late-season collapse was to the benefit of the Texans, who sat at 6-5 ahead of Week 13 and won four of their final six to steal the AFC South crown away from the Jaguars at the buzzer.

Two years ago, the Titans sat atop the AFC South rankings with a 7-3 record ahead of Week 12. But then the improbable happened: they went on a miraculous seven-game losing streak to end the season 7-10 and opened the door for the Jaguars, who started the year 3-7, to go on a run, winning six of their final seven to finish 9-8 and the winners of the AFC South.

Now the Colts have the opportunity to make it three years in a row where a team battles back from improbable odds to steal the AFC South away from the far-and-away favorite. For the Colts, they need to win three more games than the Texans down the stretch. So if the Texans lose three of their final five, the Colts must win all five of their remaining games. And if the Cotls even lose one, they will need the Texans to lose at least four.

The odds are stacked against the Colts to complete this task. But to that, I say lightning has already struck twice, so it happening for a third time doesn't seem that crazy at all. And after a decade of not winning the AFC South, it feels only fitting the team to find a way to win it in a magical fashion like this. So buckle up, Colts fans, because there's a chance this 2024 season becomes way more entertaining than anyone could have imagined.
