The Indianapolis Colts finalized their 53-man roster today, and there were multiple shocking moves made by the team. None more than their choice to waive former second-round pick and Indianapolis native Juju Brents.

The Colts drafted Brents in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft. He spent his college years at Iowa and Kansas State, but this was a homecoming for Brents, who was born and raised in Indianapolis, Indiana. He graduated from Warren Central High School and grew up a Colts fan. During his time with the Colts, Brents logged nine starts and recorded one interception and six pass deflections. This offseason, he was competing to be the second starting outside CB on the Colts roster with Jaylon Jones and rookie Justin Walley. It became clear even before the injuries that Brent’s poor fit in Lou Anarumo’s defensive scheme would make it hard for him to win the starting spot. For him to be waived, though, is a significant shock.

Sadly, this feel-good story doesn’t have a happy ending for Brents and the Colts. Injuries derailed his career in a significant way over the past two years. He only appeared in 11 games during his first two seasons and missed most of training camp with a hamstring injury. The injuries finally piled up too high for the Colts to continue looking past. He now hits the waiver wire, where teams will be able to claim him and the two remaining years of his rookie deal. If he goes unclaimed, he will be free to sign with any team as a free agent. The Colts and their fans had a lot of high hopes for Brents, and to see it end this way feels truly heartbreaking for all involved. Despite things not working out in Indianapois, I think I speak for all of Colts nation when I say I’m rooting for Brents to find a new spot in the NFL and turn his career around.
