The long-awaited decision for the winner of the Indianapolis Colts’ starting QB battle between Daniel Jones and Anthony Richardson has finally been made.
The Colts have announced that Jones will be the team’s starter for Week One vs. the Miami Dolphins and beyond. This decision has been met with considerable hostility from Colts fans, and the vibe around the franchise is quickly approaching the rock-bottom feeling many experienced while watching the team’s train wreck of a season in 2022. Winning can cure that quickly, though, but now the pressure is on for this choice by the Colts to work out. Whether you agree or disagree with the Colts’ selection, one thing has become abundantly clear: fear was a part of this decision. The Colts went with the player they believe to be the safer option at QB, but will playing scared be the knife in the coffin for multiple people’s jobs within the franchise?
The Colts seem to be operating out of fear, and that never works out well
Even fans of Richardson have to admit there is too much volatility to his game. Some mountain-top highs and ocean-floor lows have hurt the Colts’ offense at times during the past two seasons. The Colts are going to self-proclaim that they went with the safer choice with a higher floor. The problem with that is we are talking about Daniel Jones, a QB whose mental mistakes have also plagued his career. In my opinion, I believe the fear of people losing their jobs because of Richardson failing has led the Colts to ignore who Jones has been throughout his career. They can say he gives them the best chance to win games, but there is nothing tangible you can look at throughout his career to lead you to that conclusion.
Jones is more comfortable taking what the defense gives him, though, and maybe that can help the Colts’ offense appear more stable to the outside. They will also lose the big-play potential that their offense has with Richardson on the field. The Colts are committing to an offense that will focus on long, methodical drives, which is great as long as it works. This will essentially be the motto for the Colts this season. If this works, they will get to tell the fan base and the world I told you so. If it doesn’t, they simply won’t be here to explain why they chose this route.
We will have to wait and see what this means for Richardson’s future with the team. However, it appears to be pointing toward the conclusion of this experiment in Indianapolis, at least. This is essentially the second time the Colts have benched him, and if there are any players out there that have successfully come back from that to become that same team’s franchise QB, the list can’t be very long. A lot of times, this type of situation would lead to a young player requesting a trade, but there has been no public request for that from Richardson or his camp at this time. The Colts have preached all offseason that they will not give up on Richardson, even if he didn’t win this battle. Maybe they think he can be the outlier and turn things around, but like they’ve done to him his entire career, the Colts are going to force Richardson to climb a mountain to succeed, and eventually, you have to assume it is too much for him to overcome.
