Starters use the preseason to prepare for the regular season, but for players fighting for a roster spot, these games mean everything.

A bad performance can ensure you are released/waived on roster cut down day, but a big showing could earn you a spot on an NFL roster. For one veteran player, the latter was the case today, as his big outing should all but lock up his spot on the Colts’ 53 man roster.

If you ask me, Chris Lammons locked up his spot on the Colts roster today

The Colts’ best defender during their Week 2 preseason loss to the Packers was without a doubt CB Chris Lammons. The Colts just recently brought Lammons back after multiple injuries hit the team’s CB room early in training camp. The veteran was able to demonstrate that he is likely one of the team’s top depth options available if players like Kenny Moore II, Jaylon Jones, and Juju Brents have to miss time during the regular season.

He finished the game with a forced fumble, a sack, three pass deflections, and a near interception. He lined up in the slot and on the outside during the game and was stellar in coverage throughout the game. He seems to be a man even better fit in Lou Anarumo’s defense than he was in Gus Bradley’s last season. His ability to blitz out of the CB spot could prove to be an invaluable skill, helping the team utilize it on the field, even if Moore II needs to take a play off here or there, or if he were to have to miss time in the regular season. It’s become clear that Lammons is the best option to be the backup slot to Moore, and I’d be pretty shocked if he didn’t make the Colts’ initial 53 man roster at this point.
